Voice dictation vs a voice assistant: what is the difference?

By Time Hackers Lab · Published

Voice dictation turns what you say into typed text in the box your cursor is in. A voice assistant does the task you describe and tells you the result. Dictation saves typing. An assistant saves the work. Many people use both.

What does dictation do well?

Tools such as Wispr Flow and Superwhisper are good at one thing: your speech becomes clean text, in any app. If your work is writing emails, messages or notes, that is exactly the help you want.

Where does it stop?

After the sentence is typed, you still do the work. You say "find the invoice from March and total it", and you get that sentence typed. Then you open the folder, find the file and add it up yourself.

What does an assistant add?

A voice assistant takes the same sentence and returns the invoice found and the total spoken. Then you say the next thing. It also runs long tasks in the background, keeps a board of what you asked and points at things on your screen.

Which should you choose?

Choose dictation if you want faster typing. Choose an assistant if you want fewer tasks to do yourself. Parviz is the second kind, and it is not made by or connected to the dictation tools named here.

Questions people ask

Can I use both?

Yes. They do different jobs, and nothing stops you using a dictation tool for writing and an assistant for tasks.

Is an assistant slower than dictation?

For typing, dictation is the right tool. For a task with several steps, an assistant is faster because you skip the steps.
